Why is everyone talking about CBD?

September 20, 2018

Cannabidiol (or CBD) is an extract of the Cannabis Sativa plant, and one of the many compounds of the plant.  The first thing you should know is that CBD is not psychoactive – it does not get you high.  The primary psychoactive ingredient in marijuana is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC and CBD are two of the many compounds known as Cannabinoids, all produced by the cannabis plant.

So far CBD looks like the most interesting compound in the Cannabinoid group from a health perspective. It is touted to help relax (without being psychoactive), has anti-inflammatory, anti-pain and antipsychotic properties as well as being used by many as a preventative measure for serious diseases like Alzheimer’s and heart disease.  Whilst there is still much research to be carried out into this complex plant, one thing is for sure, the cannabis train has come into the station and it’s set to have a BIG impact.

In the UK, you can get CBD products in high street shops, like Holland & Barrett, however, the majority of suppliers are online. Carun, Love Hemp, Healthspan and Total CBD are just some of the companies that sell CBD products, which include oils, lotions, lip-balm, e-liquids, chocolates and gummy bears. Including Botanic Lab's first of its kind CBD Soft Drink - there is something to suit everyone.  You can choose your preferred way of using CBD, so you can find a product that fits into your everyday life. Even Coca-Cola is considering using CBD for an infused beverage line.

There are a couple of factors to consider when choosing your CBD; Quality and Quantity. Firstly, whether the product is an Isolate or Full-Spectrum. A CBD isolate is exactly what it sounds like; pure, isolated CBD compound, all by itself. At Botanic Lab, we use full-spectrum - which is the whole plant extract, which includes other cannabinoids, vitamins, minerals, terpenes, and healthy Omega fatty acids - making it more beneficial for the drinker. The amount of CBD in a product varies, and most suppliers recommend a daily dose of 2-5mg. Each CBD Botanical Tea drink contains 2mg of Hemp CBD extract, an amount ideal for general health maintenance.

There are many types of consumers using CBD for various reasons. Using CBD to treat epilepsy and cancer is prominently discussed in the British media, but we have found some fascinating scientific papers that explore how CBD could be used to treat anxiety-related conditions, inflammatory pain, acne, neurological symptoms and disorders. Even some holistic vets are recommending that you give your dogs CBD oil in their diet.

Celebrities and public figures have been in on the action for a while now. Friends star Jennifer Aniston has endorsed the use of CBD, taking it to relieve pain and anxiety. Olivia Wilde uses it in a body lotion to relax her muscles, Michael J Fox of the Back to the Future trilogy regularly uses CBD to help relieve the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease.  Victoria Secret Model, Alessandra Ambrosio uses CBD oil, pre-show to reduce anxiety.

Consumers are increasingly bypassing alcohol in favour of soft drink ‘options’, but those options are limited, boring and frankly a little flaccid. This is the change we have all been waiting for.  We have incorporated one of the most talked about and culturally significant plant ingredients of the last 100 years into our brand new CBD Botanical Tea Drink.

Who doesn’t crave an evening G&T for its ability to wipe away the day's stress? Who doesn’t reach for a quick glass of wine before a date to calm the nerves and jitters? CBD is renowned for its ability to reduce anxiety along with a myriad of other benefits making it the perfect drinking partner, without any of the negative impacts of alcohol.

In short, we’ve taken the healthy part of cannabis and put it in a drink.

You can buy the new CBD Botanical Tea drink along with the rest of the new range here and at a bar near you soon.
